The Gifted and Talented
Program in Drama took on a new format in 2000-2001 as it shifted from
an acting
class to a survey of theater history and literature from 500 BC to the
present. The class uses the same text as Colby
College's survey course and beginning fall 2001 will once
again meet on the Colby campus.
Students follow the path of performace from
the first lone actor, Thespis, through many pendulum swings of law and
fashion. We examine performance styles, theatre designs and prominent playwrights
as we read and discuss plays in the context of the political and social
priorities of their times. Each session also features a chance for scene
work from the plays.
Plays read in 2000-2001 included: Medea, The
Menaechmi, The Second Shepard's Play, The Tempest, Tartuffe, She Stoops
to Conquer, The Doll House, The Glass Menagerie.
The return to Colby means we can also look
forward to contact with faculty and students who have always been happy
to share insights into upcoming productions.
If this class is a good match for you, you'll
be intrigued by the world of theater and eager to explore it with like-minded
friends. You may not be an actor, but you are willing to read scenes with
others. You might not see yourself as a potential English major, but you
are curious about the thousands of famous plays you haven't had a chance
to read yet. Without the pressure of tests and papers, you'll still be
ready to jump into discussions or perhaps do some extra outside reading. Finally,
you are able to commit to missing nine full Thursdays of school and to reading
at least seven plays with great attention to detail.
The application process for membership varies
among the four school districts involved, but teacher Kim Gordon is happy
to answer questions from prospective members. Email her at: kim_gordon@fc.wtvl.k12.me.us
